I love Grey's Anatomy. I've followed this show for quite a while, it's now my Thursday ritual. I just finished watching the season finale. One of the things that stuck out the most in this episode (well to me anyway) is the present situation between Christina and her husband Owen. Christina is pregnant and is determined to have an abortion, while her husband would like her to have the baby.
Where exactly am i going with this one might ask? Well we're going down the road of unplanned pregnancy. Christina on several occasions has vehemently stated that she does not want to have kids, but here she is, pregnant. This is something that we see mirrored so often in real life. People who are not ready for or who just don't want children are doing little to nothing to protect themselves from pregnancy. It irks me because there are so many available methods of contraception out there, especially cost effective ones and those that require little maintenance (if that's the suitable word) The decision to have a child is a life changing one, it shouldn't be "woopsy daisy" I guess we're going to be parents. Children deserve better than that.
Don't get me wrong. I know not everything goes according to plan in life, I understand that shit happens. But if you are presented with the opportunity to prevent it from happening why wouldn't you? If you're sexually active and you're not planning on having children then you should use some form of birth control, the rhythm method, an iud, the pill, the patch, something! Christina could not be more right when she says" This isn't pizza vs. Thai. You don't give a little on a baby." It should be something that you're prepared for and in the event that you're not prepared you should be mature enough to start preparation and financially stable to some degree, because having a kid is expensive.
