According to the researchers at Columbia University in New York, this new breakthrough in contraception is nigh. The drug is suppose to temporarily inhibit the production of sperm without causing long term infertility. So far it has only been tested on mice but scientist have not yet recorded any negative or damaging side effects and normal fertility was restored after halting pill usage.
It is a well known fact in the health world that Vitamin A is an essential mineral in the production of sperm. Therefore the pill hinders Vitamin A production, making the man sterile until he stops taking it.
Scientists are unsure of how often men would need to take the pill. They are assuming it might need to be daily ingested but are hoping to create something strong enough to be taken once a week.
Dr Debra Wolgemuth, one of the scientist involved in the development of this contraceptive, points out that this pill does not affect testosterone levels. Testosterone is not only vital for the masculine sex drive but it also regulates cholesterol levels. A fluctuation in the level of cholesterol can lead to heart attacks and weight gain.
I'm hoping this will be 'The One'-- the ultimate male contraceptive. Hopefully in a few years, scientist will begin to test it on humans and the results would only change for the better. Although I can't help but wonder how receptive men will be to the male pill.
